God Bless America, Osama is dead! Ring them bells

Is he? How do we actually know? Does it even matter?

In my last article, on US foreign policy (‘Men Who Stare at Goats (…Who Are the Brain Police?’), I referred to George Orwell’s 1984, the go-to text of the self-respecting “liberal” political journalist.

In 1984 the political enemies of Big Brother forever change, without protest or question by an ultra-oppressed and perpetually misinformed people. Total war between Eurasia, Oceania and Eastasia can always be re-written; alliances and enemies can change, because they were always that way (weren’t they?), and there’s nothing the plebs and proles can do about it. The Ministries have power over information, and with it, the minds of the people.

I see no reason why this isn’t true today. There’s plenty of evidence available that suggests Osama bin-Laden has worked alongside the Americans before. There are persuasive arguments claiming some of the videos, with Osama professing “death to the Republic” and all that, were faked. Some people thought he had been dead for years. It doesn’t especially matter because there’s probably no way you and I will ever know for sure. Osama’s long-sought corpse is at sea, some 1,560km – by road – from Karachi, and the Indian Ocean.

This is not a time for celebration. It is a time for suspicion – questions need to be asked, and should continue to be asked. Various luminaries have turned to Twitter and the press to celebrate the “death of Osama”. Rochelle Wiseman, of The Saturdays, got all emotional:

This Bank Holiday weekend has been a very historic one to say the least… It’s like a Disney film…The Prince marries the Princess and the villain dies #justice

Rebecca Black got heavy:

God bless America. God bless the world.

But Katy Perry really got into the swing of things. She tweeted a string of “opinionated” sentiments that managed to straddle philosophy, patriotic jubilation and being really out there:

AMERICA F**K YEAH, HERE TO SAVE THE MOTHER F**KIN DAY YEAH! #necessaryusageoftheFbombday

I believe in justice… but don’t u think that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind? ☹ #revolutioncomesthroughlove #worldpeace

But in general (& then after this I’ll go back to being an opinion less popstar) It is a GREAT day 4 America & I’m PROUD 2 b an American!

If Katy Perry is proud to be an American, then someone get her on Ellen Degeneres and present her with the images of limbless, lifeless children, results of the Americans’ use of Agent Orange in Vietnam; show her Afghanistan, Iraq, and a world ravaged by her great nation’s god-given right. If God ever blessed America, at least we all know our place up there is safe. Hallelujah.

It’s not just pop-glitz ninnies that are celebrating though, so too are the world’s press. Including The Mail, who published a fake photograph of Osama’s blackened and matted corpse-face. Just beware, all too often we know nothing.

I might be proven wrong – this might be a rare moment of truth by the Americans, Osama might be sailing away to some Styx i’th Indies this minute – but based on what we’ve seen in the past, is that at all likely?

Is it?

Does it even matter?
